Arusha’s Jonas Jacob overpowered Kenyan Dennis Ochieng to coast to the Simba Tennis semifinal stage at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club courts yesterday. The Tanzania began the match energetically to post a convincing 6-1 win in the first set before losing narrowly by 6-7 in the subsequent set. Jacob, who defeated his brother Lembris in the opening match on Wednesday, completed his mission with an easy 6-1 win in the final set. Jacob will today play the tournament’s top seed, Duncan Mugabe of Uganda, in the first semifinal pairing at the venue. On his way his way to the semis, the Ugandan ousted Sebastian Mtupili of Tanzania by two straight sets. Mugabe posted a 6-4 win in the first set before registering a resounding 6-0 victory in the final set. Omar Abdallah of Dar es Salaam was the second local player to qualify for the semifinals following his two-set victory over Hassan Kassim. Abdallah fired 6-1 in the first set, but had to use extra skills to edge out Kassim by 7-5 in the second set. Omar will play against the winner of the match pitting Kenyan Gilbert Kibeti against Kiango Kipingu of Dar es Salaam. In women’s discipline, Sarah Bura eliminated Ramla Omary with a commanding two-set victory in a one-sided encounter. Bura posted 2-0 and 6-0 wins. Other players, who won their matches yesterday are Inger Njau who beat Rest Makoye by two straight while Swalehe Hussein eased past Abdallah Poniponi 6-4,6-2. |
