Omary Abdallah of Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club hopes to repeat his wonder strikes in the ITF-Money Circuit Tennis Championship that gets underway in Burundi today. Abdallah, who put in a mercurial display in the recently concluded Simba Open, is the only Tanzania’s envoy in the coveted tournament. Speaking before flying to Bujumbura yesterday, Abdallah said he was delighted to regain his best form in the Simba Open and promised to sparkle in the ITF tourney. “I relished the tournament because I managed to rediscover my form, Mugabe (Duncan) beat me in the final, but it was through sheer luck. “Now I’ve a very tough assignment in Bujumbura, but I promise to leave my mark there,” he said. Hordes of prominent players from East and Central Africa plus a few from outside the region will take part in the tournament. Some players from America, Europe, Asia and Australia are already in Bujumbura for the tournament. German Andre Begemann told The Citizen that it took him plenty of time to confirm his participation. “I had many doubts coming to Africa for the first time let alone Burundi, I knew very little about the continent, but I’m impressed by the level of organisation,” he said. The event is part of the ongoing series of the ITF Men’s Circuit of Future Tournaments in the East African region. |
