Tanzania’s prominent runner Zakia Mrisho failed to replicate her Lille Grand Prix form after crossing the finish line fifth in the Continental Championship held in Croatia over the weekend. Zakia, who grabbed a gold medal in the 400m Grand Prix race last week, competed in the 5,000-metre event and clocked 16:12:36 minutes. The Zagreb race that featured 12 athletes saw the Tanzanian start on a low tempo, but improved her pace after the 1,000m mark to occupy the sixth spot. Zakia kept on improving to hit the second place, but ran out of steam, leaving her challengers to overtake her in the final two laps. The first position went to Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot who clocked 16:05:74 minutes while Sentayehu Ejigu of Ethiopia came second with 16:07:11. Molly Huddle, who lowered the US and Area record to 14:44:76 minutes in Brussels 10 days ago, was third after clocking 16:08:60. The Athletics Tanzania (AT) president, Francis John, showered praise on Zakia despite finishing fifth, adding that she had improved and stood a big chance of carting home medals in the Commonwealth Games. “She has been performing well lately and this is a clear indication that Tanzania will haul many medals from the Games,” John said. Zakia was the second Tanzanian to win selection in the African team after Filbert Bayi (1974). |
