Tanzania’s dream of qualifying for the World Netball Championship ended yesterday after Taifa Queens slumped to an ignominious 57-29 defeat at the hands of Botswana. The Queens, who kick-started their campaign with a stunning 50-25 demolition of Lesotho, suffered the third defeat in a row. The result meant that hosts South Africa and Botswana booked their 2011 finals tickets. The championship will take place in Singapore. The chairperson of the netball governing body (Chaneta), Anna Bayi, said the Queens failed completely to match Botswana’s tempo. She said the experienced Botswana players displayed some sublime netball skills that left Taifa Queens chasing the ball. Botswana have been participating in the World Championship regularly. “Our players tried hard to stop them, but it was a tall order and I think we still have a long way to go before matching their standard,” she said. According to her, they would start early preparations for the coming regional and continental tournaments. “Our team’s performance was far from impressive, so we have to rejig the squad and start early preparations for the next assignments,” she said. Taifa Queens will wind up their matches today when they face Zimbabwe. If they manage to post a victory, they will claim the fourth place out of eight. As the Chaneta boss bemoans dismal performance, South Africa head coach Carin Strauss identified Tanzania as a team that is capable of causing upsets in the near future. Strauss said she was delighted with the way the youthful Taifa Queen players defended and attacked despite losing the match. South Africa trounced Tanzania 60-25 before the latter succumbed to a 38-28 defeat to Namibia on Tuesday. |
