By Njoki Kaigai I found myself in a rather interesting and emotional debate regarding, of all things, hair, the other day. A group of men and women were having an argument about how much hair one should have. Women have, for the longest time, endured excruciating pain, suffering and humiliation as they try to get rid of eye, armpit and pubic hair. Ask any woman who has been a victim of a bad waxing or tweezing session and she will tell you how the boundaries of pain get stretched in a quest to present a hair-free feast for the men to enjoy. Blame society or male genes but strangely enough, our men have a laissez-faire attitude when it comes to all matters hairy. They get their knickers in a twist whenever they encounter overgrown or unkempt female foliage yet many of them walk around with hair that can provide homes for most of the world’s endangered species. If there is one thing that peeves women, it is the area of how much beard a man should have. There was a time when having your jaw concealed by layers upon layers of beard was deemed a sign of sexiness and virility. Some men have simply refused to move on, with some viewing their beards as testing ground for women who want to nurture their hair-plaiting skills. They do not even go for the occasional trim and prune to ensure that all hairs are aligned and that any spiky ends have been reduced to a tolerable minimum. Beauty is, indeed, in the eyes of the beholder, but I can tell you that there is little to behold when one is confronted with a mass of overgrown, uneven beard in the high temperatures of this part of the world. We have evolved from those pre-historic days when man needed to grow thick manes and beards so that he could blend in with the vegetation as he went on hunting expeditions. The only thing worth hunting these days are the babes and the bucks – and speaking for the babes, too much hair is a turn off. Men will protest that they have the right to have as much hair as they want, but they need to remember that women are the ultimate consumers of their bodies. It wouldn’t hurt to keep the hair in check, especially considering what we women do to make men happy. ENDS |
