Faith Herman Ringo, 31, doctorI save because I have two children and I know they need to go to school. I don’t know whether tomorrow I will be earning enough to keep the children in school and to sustain myself. My parents inspired me to save when they opened an account for me when I was very young and I still hold it to date. Dr. Geminian Festo, 30, medical doctor I started saving when I encountered hardships in life plus I wanted somewhere that I could access my money. Now I am saving because I want to build my own house. I also plan to rear chicken and cows which needs a lot of money. Marry Mwenisongole, (43), early childhood teacher I am teaching my four children to save. I give my firstborn child, who is in standard seven, her week’s ration, so that she can learn how to budget for it. On the weekends I check whether she has saved any money, and if she hasn’t I find out the reason. If she has saved, I recommend that she offers it in church and she is happy. Our church at Kimara has a small Sacco and I have opened saving accounts for my children. I even managed to open an early childhood school through my savings. Mama Asia (42) a businesswoman In the past, I saved through putting some money in a little box. I have never opened a bank account because life is so demanding. I have children to take to school and to feed. I have never taught my children—who have all completed standard seven expect one—to save. My husband saves through a merry-go-round group though. Iddy Hassan (63), Security guard I am a former industrial worker in the blanket producing industry and I benefit from the pension from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Now, I am appreciating the importance of saving, as I am able to enjoy the rewards of having kept some money away. I have my payments from the fund every month, besides my security guard salary. |
