The Citizen Correspondent Dakar. Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade has named 13 army generals upon the recommendation of the country’s army chief of staff General Abdoulaye Fall. President Wade proceeded with the nomination in his capacity as Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Senegal.Disclosing the news on Friday evening, the national broadcaster said President Wade signed the decree during a ministerial meeting on Thursday evening. The promotion takes effect today. Besides a few, the rest of those replaced are in their late sixties and are proceeding to retirement, the source said. Just last year, the government raised the retirement age for senior security officers from 65 to 69 years while enlisted men particularly in the gendarmerie go on retirement at 55. Prominent among those promoted is former Colonel Balla Keita and Sangué Ndaw who were the military attachés to the Senegalese embassies in China and India respectively.Brigadier General Keita will also head an inspectorate of the army and replaces General Anthiou Pierre Ndiaye who has gone on retirement. Also very popular among the newly promoted generals are former Colonels Ousmane Kane and Mamadou Sow who served as military attaché in Washington and Army Chief of Staff of UN forces in Darfour respectively. Among the newly promoted officials, is Colonel Mouhamadou Moustapha Diawara, the former Secretary General of the High Command of the National Aviation Council who now heads the national fire brigade. Informed sources said the last time such a promotion to the rank of general was made dates back to nearly 20 years. It can be recalled that three Senegalese generals: Mountaga Diallo, Babacar Gaye and El Hadji Mouhamadou Kandji have led the UN forces in Darfour, Cote d’Ivoire and DR Congo respectively. It is estimated that the Senegalese army is 30,000-strong out of a population of slightly over 13 million . |
