Kampala. Uganda’s social security sector has failed to match the growth attained by its regional counterparts, according to Mr Richard Byarugaba, the new chairman of the East and Central Africa Social Security Association (ECASSA). Addressing journalists in Kampala this week during the launch of the ongoing regional social security conference, Mr Byarugaba, who is also the managing director of the National Social Security Fund, said Uganda needs to take lessons that will help it to grow an all-inclusive social security sector. He said the conference was timely as it will help Uganda learn from its neighbours’ success stories and get best strategies to uplift its own sector. Uganda’s social security sector mostly caters for people in the formal employment, which leaves the biggest part of the country’s population without formal financial cover in times of retirement.
