By Majuto Omary The Citizen Reporter Dar es Salaam.Ten teams are expected to compete in this year’s national handball championship set for next month in Singida. The teams are Magereza, Ngome and JKT, according to Tanzania Handball Association (TAHA) secretary general, Nicholaus Mihayo.Mihayo said yesterday the three teams will compete in both men and women categories during the annual championship.
“Singida will field four teams in the tournament by virtue of being the hosts,” said Mihayo, adding that preparations for the event were on course. The TAHA official fell short of naming the four teams, saying the Singida handball authorities were still working on the matter.
He appealed to institutions and individuals for sponsorship, saying they need at least Sh24million to facilitate smooth organisation of the championship.“We need the money to foot, among other things, transport, meal and accommodation costs for participating teams,” he said. Mihayo said the winners in both categories would represent the country in the forthcoming international competitions and he asked stakeholders to support TAHA in its efforts to raise funds for the Singida championship.
He said they will also use the championship to select players who would form the men and women national teams for this year’s East and Central Senior Challenge Cup.The TAHA official said they can’t manage to raise the money on their own and asked the business community to help them out.
“We are in financial crisis. We’ve approached a number of institutions but none of them has so far responded positively. If all goes well, the championship will start on February 20,” he saidThis will be the first time for Singida to host the national handball championship.
