Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Mainland Premier League newly promoted Kengold FC have been awarded the NBC Championship trophy after emerging the winners of the just ended second tier.  

The Mbeya based side, who will feature in the 2024/2025 top tier  season, were awarded the trophy after playing in a special friendly against Pamba Jiji FC, other new entrants in the Tanzania Premier League. The encounter was held at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam and ended in a 1-1 draw.

The game was graced by dignitaries and football enthusiasts, including Chunya District Commissioner Mbaraka Batunga and Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) Chairman Steven Mnguto, who represented Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president Wallace Karia.

Speaking after the special tie, Batunga commended Kengold’s achievement and called upon them to prepare well for the next premiership season.

“Today, as the residents of Chunya, we are proud to be the champions of a league that has demonstrated such quality, and through this competition, we believe we will pose a challenge to the teams we will face in the NBC Premier League. The task ahead is to do even much better  in the next Mainland Tanzania Premier League season,” said Batunga.

For his part, NBC Bank Business Director Elvis Ndunguru said the bank’s commitment to support sports, including football, golf, and athletics, has been instrumental in creating employment opportunities and enhancing the overall competitiveness of the league.

He said the bank, which sponsors three main leagues in the country, will continue to promote the leagues to achieve positive outcomes in line with the objectives of the sponsorship and job creation, saying that a total of 7,000 direct jobs have been created through the bank sponsorship.

“We congratulate all the teams that competed in the Championship, especially Kengold for emerging the champions. We also congratulate Pamba Jiji FC for becoming the runners-up ahead of featuring in the next NBC Premier League season,” said Ndunguru.

Kengold team captain Charles Masai expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders and the sponsor for creating an environment that made them excel.

He said Kengold will prepare adequately for the  next  NBC Premier League season.
