Dar es Salaam. Only one job seeker out of 100 applicants managed to get a job in the public sector in the last three years, with over 700 of the certificates submitted to authorities for verification being found to be fake.

“A total of 594,300 applications were received in a period of three years of which 140,000 made it to interviews, but by December only 6,099 open vacancies were filled,” said Mr Xavier Daudi , who is the Secretary of the Government Employment Secretariat.

“In the same period, a total of 18,817 copies of certificates were submitted to respective authorities for verification, of which 706 were discovered to be fake.”

Mr Daudi also spoke about the current application system which he described as more transparent and convenient. He said the Secretariat’s portal allows applicants to fill in their details, giving them a chance to be considered for more opportunities in the future other than the positions they had applied for.

However, he advised job seekers to also look for opportunities outside the public sector because the government cannot accommodate all people seeking employment.
