An ambulance has been seized on allegedly transporting khat.
Mara Regional Commissioner Adam Malima told The Citizen that an ambulance owned by Tarime District Hospital was seized at Bunda town on Tuesday night, July 10, loaded with khat.
"Before the vehicle was seized, its driver said it had inadequate fuel to take a patient to Bugando Referral Hospital in Mwanza Region,” he said.
Mr Malima said the patient had to be transported by a police van.
He said law enforcers, who were taking the patient to Bugando, saw the same ambulance that was said to have run out of fuel after reaching Bunda town.
"They stopped the vehicle to establish where it was coming from and where was it going, only to find out that it was loaded with khat. The driver had nothing to tell police officers. He was arrested for questioning.”
Mr Malima said detailed information will be released by Tarime-Rorya Special Zone Police Commander Henry Mwaibambe, who confirmed the incident when contacted.
He said police would arrest the Tarime District Hospital medical officer in charge for questioning.
“We want to know how the vehicle left the hospital for an illegal job instead of taking the patient to Bugando Referral Hospital,” he said.
