Stern punishment in offing for by-laws’ violators

The government plans to amend the 1982 Local Government (Urban Authorities) Act with a view of increasing punishment for people who violate by-laws governing the affairs of the urban authorities.

Dodoma. The government wants to amend the Local Government (Urban Authorities) Act with a view of increasing punishment for people who violate by-laws governing the affairs of the urban authorities.

Among others, the government proposes an increase of fine between Sh50, 000 and Sh300, 000 or two years in jail or both against people who will be found guilty of violating the by-laws.

A call for the amendment of the Act, is included in the 2018 Miscellaneous Amendments Bill, which was tabled for the first time in the Parliament recently.

The Miscellaneous Amendments Bill proposes amendment of other three Acts including; the Political Service Retirement Benefits Act-1999, the Tanzania Passports and Travel Documents Act and Tanzania Tourist Board Act.

According to the Attorney General, Dr Adelardus Kilangi, the amendment of the Local Government (Urban Authorities) Act, aims at aligning the Law with the conditions indicated in the Local Government (District Authorities) Act 156(3) chapter 287.

Commenting further on the amendment of the Political Service Retirement Benefits Act, Dr Kilangi elaborated that the amendment aims reviewing sections pertaining rights of retired leaders to acquire passports.

He further expounded that all issues in relation to the issuance of passports to the retired leaders will be indicated in the Tanzania Passports and Travel Documents Act.

In addition, the Attorney General asserted that the leaders’ benefits will be indicated in the Political Service Retirement Benefits Act chapter 225.
