Arusha legislator Godbless Lema has criticised the government for deploying the army in what the Bank of Tanzania termed as an anti-money laundering operation

Arusha. Arusha Urban MP Godbless Lema has rejected reasons given by Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Governor Florens Luoga on the use of military to crack down on bureaux de change.

He told journalists on Tuesday, November 21, 2018, that it was wrong to use the military in civilian matters.

He said BoT reasons that police officers were guarding schools when Form Two students were writing their examinations did not hold water.

“Arusha has 24 public schools and 49 private schools. The argument that there were inadequate police officers to undertake the operation at bureau is implausible. We have enough police officers.”

He said he was not against the BoT operation, but he opposed the use of the military as it frightened the public.

“The operation could have been led by police and even security officers and not soldiers,” he said.
