Dar es Salaam. ACT-Wazalendo party has appointed Mr Juma Duni Haji as its deputy party leader, a few days after he defected from Civic United Front.

Mr Haji’s appointment was announced today, March 26, 2019, by ACT- Wazalendo leader Zitto Kabwe at a press conference in Dar es Salaam.

"I proposed him to hold the position given his experience and fortunately our national governing committee approved it," said Kabwe.

Mr Haji, according to Mr Kabwe, will assist in handling various tasks as the party enhances its stability.

Mr Haji was CUF’s deputy vice chairman (Zanzibar) and briefly defected to Chadema in 2015 during which he paired with former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa to run for the union presidency on a Chadema ticket. The pair were fronted by a coalition of the opposition under UKAWA.

Mr Lowassa has since rejoined the ruling party CCM and Mr Haji recently joined Mr Seif Sharif Hamad to defect to ACT –Wazalendo after losing the battle for the party to Prof Ibrahim Lipumba.

In another development, Mr Kabwe said that ACT-Wazalendo is set to register thousands of new members tomorrow, March  27, 2019.

"We will handover membership cards to 12,600 new members of ACT Wazalendo," he said at the briefing. Many of the new members are formerly CUF followers who are trooping to the new party in solidarity with their leaders.
