Egyptian national held over attempt to smuggle out 47 tortoises

Zanzibar. The Zanzibar Aviation Authority (ZAA) has held an Egyptian national allegedly for attempting to smuggle out 47 tortoises.

ZAA public relations officer Mulhat Yussuf  told journalists on Monday, April 15, 2019,the Egyptian was about to travel on Sunday, April 14, 2019.

She said security officers at the Zanzibar International Airport discovered that his luggage had tortoises.

“He was arrested and taken at the airport police station for further procedures and legal action,” he said.

Ms Yussuf warned travellers against breaching laws.

She said ZAA would continue to maintain security.
