DC bans molasses to control production of illicit alcohol

Rombo. Rombo District Commissioner in Kilimanjaro Region, Agnes Hokororo, has banned molasses trade in the district, as measures of controlling the production, sale, and transport of illicit brew, locally known as Gongo.

Hokororo issued the ban on Thursday saying those who were bringing the product in Rombo claim it is for animal feeds yet the reality is that they use it for brewing illicit liqour.

She said they had taken different measures of controlling the illicit brew including conducting an operation which kicked off on March 1.

During the operation, 30 people were arrested, 314 litres of the illicit brew and 16 equipments too were seized.

Speaking on different occasions, some residents of the district said they support the efforts District Commissioner’s efforts because the brew had become a contributing factor to the moral degeneration of the youth.

“Alcohol has affected our society as currently there are occurrences of brutal incidents of gender abuse and humiliation. All this, it is because of excessive consumption of alcohol,” he said.
