Foreigner charged with giving bribe

Moshi. A foreigner Sureshbabu Kakolu has been charged with bribing Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Kilimanjaro regional manager Msafiri Mbibo with $2,000 (Sh4.4 million).

The accused, who is in remand, is the finance manager of two construction companies, Dott Services (TZ) and General Nile Company for Roads and Bridges/Dott Services JV respectively.

Mr Kakolu was yesterday brought before Senior Resident Magistrate-in-Charge of Moshi District Court, Ms Sophia Masati, and charges against him were read by the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) prosecutor Rehema Mteta.

Reading the charge, Ms Mteta claimed that on Thursday, this week, in TRA offices, PCCB and TRA set a trap which caugth the accused as he paid $2,000 to the manager as an inducement to the latter to grant tax amnesty.

According to the prosecutor, until October 25, 2018, the two firms owed Sh6.6 billion as tax arrears of between 2013 and 2018.

The accused, defended by lawyers David Shilatu and Joseph Peter, denied the charge. The prosecutor asked the court to institute tougher bail conditions against the accused, who is not a Tanzanian citizen.
