Kigoma. The government has said it will continue to put in place suitable environment for potential investors in the fisheries sector as this can contribute significantly to the country’s economic development.

The move, the government said, would also benefit communities living close to water bodies.

The assurance was made at Kibirizi yesterday by the permanent secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy and Coordination), Prof Faustin Kamuzora, who toured fishing communities in Kigoma. The tour was organised by the Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC).

Acting TNBC executive secretary Oliva Vegula said the council has partnered with the Local Investment Climate (LIC) to come up with a pilot project in the region that seeks to help fishermen to increase their earnings.

Ms Vegula said the TNBC was monitoring closely the progress of the pilot project so that it could decide whether or not similar projects should be launched in other regions.

“We are doing well and have been making headway towards consolidating Districts Business Councils (DCs and Regional Business Councils (RBCs) to become stronger and contribute dearly in the national economic growth,” she explained.

Prof Kamuzora appealed to Kigoma anglers to seize the opportunity and benefit from the pilot project.

For his part, the coordinator of Kigoma Regional Business Council, Mr Anndy Mwaisingo, said the regional body was happy with the pilot project.
