Miner killed, three injured as mine collapses

Kahama. A gold miner has died and three others are in critical condition after Mwabomba Mine in Kahama District, Shinyanga Region where they worked collapsed burying them.

One victim came out unscathed.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night, September 11 after walls of the hole they were working in collapsed burying them in the process.

A witness, Mr Sengerema Yahululuka, said that when the incident occurred they immediately embarked on trying to rescue the victims but only managed to remove three.

Kahama district commissioner Anamlingi Macha arrived at the scene and said that the three victims were immediately rushed to Kahama Hospital after undergoing emergency treatment at Mwambomba dispensary.

The DC named the deceased as Sungwe Chalamila and directed owners of the mine to ensure the dead miner got buried.

The miner who came out alright was identified as Mr Peter Majubeli.

The district boss suspended all mining activities at the area pending investigations from the mineral department.

Kahama Hospital Senior Medical officer George Masasi said that he received the three injured persons whom he named as Mr Mlekwa Said, 30, Mr Richard Elias, 24, and Mr Saguda Yunga, 35.

He added that that they were in critical condition and that Elias was in bad shape after his left hand was seriously damaged in the incident and therefore had been transferred to Bugando Hospital for further treatment.
