Arusha. At least 82 workers of the Mount Meru University in Arusha have sought intervention of the government in order to be paid their Sh1.1 billion.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, November 15, 2018, the university staff said the Baptist Church Tanzania leaders who own the university have ordered them to vacate from the campus premises.

The Mount Meru University workers chairman, Mr Michael Sambu, said they worked for 10 consecutive months without being paid.

"The university owes us Sh435.4 million salary arrears, Sh110.8 million leave allowances and Sh579.6 million pension” he said.

The university worker’s vice chairman, Mr Christian Charles, said they also seek intervention of the government in order to establish the actual owner of the university.

He said, currently, the university has plunged into ownership dispute that has largely contributed to denial of worker’s rights.

The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), recently suspended the university from admitting students after failing to meet required standards.
