  • The Registrar of Political Parties, Mr Fransis Mutungi, has blasted acts of breach of law conducted by members and supporters of the immediate former secretary general of the party, Maallm Seif Sharif Hamad, who has crossed over to ACT-Wazalendo.

Dar es Salaam. The Registrar of Political Parties, Mr Francis Mutungi, has criticised acts of breach of the law perpetrated by members and supporters of the immediate former secretary general of the party, Seif Shariff Hamad, who recently crossed over to ACT-Wazalendo.

This comes hardly two days after the High Court ruled in favour of Prof Ibrahim Lipumba as the chairman of the Civic United Front (CUF).

Mr Mutungi said Section of 11 C of the Political Parties Act (Chapter 258) prohibits any member or leader of a political party from undertaking any act of mockery to the flag of another political party.

He added that the Act stipulates that the punishment of the offence is a fine of not more than Sh1 million or imprisonment of not more than six months or both.

He said social media showed some people hoisting the flag of ACT-Wazalendo while chanting the Holy Statement of the Islamic Religion (Takbir).

The registrar said the action was not only a mockery, but also a massive breach of the country’s laws, particularly the Political Parties Act.

He added that the incident was being worked upon by his office, saying Section 9 of the Political Parties Act did not allow a political party to use religion to fulfill its goals.

He called upon members and supporters of political parties to refrain from any acts of breach of the law, saying if they did so legal actions would be taken against them and their party.

Meanwhile, CUF’s new secretary Suleiman Khalifa Suleiman has faulted the acts of painting ACT-Wazalendo colours and hoisting its flag on CUF buildings, saying it was contrary to procedures.

But the former member of Zanzibar House of Representatives for Michewani on the CUF ticket, Thubeit Khamis Faki, said most of those offices were personal properties.

whose owners decided to offer to the party in support of Mr Hamad and that after what happened, they have decided to go with Mr Hamad to his new party.

According to Mr Suleiman Khalifa Suleiman, the building had been constructed through the power of members and not by an individual person.

Khalifa made the statement on March 19, 2019 when speaking to the Citizen after reports that the colour of the party has been changed on its offices including that of its Mtendeni head office in Zanzibar.
