Progress of SGR construction good, says railways corporation

The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) said the standard gauge railway between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro will be completed in the next one year, whereas the section from Morogoro to Makutupora will be ready by February 2021

Dar es Salaam. Construction of the first phase of standard gauge railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro will be completed by November 2, next year the government said.

The section of the line linking Morogoro to Makotobora in Dodoma will be completed in February 2021, according to the government.

The construction in all phases of the project covering the two sections is projected to cost Sh7.1 trillion.

Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) managing director Masanja Kadogosa said on Wednesday, November 14 that the project was being implemented phase after phase to ensure it is completed in the set time.

"Every section of the project has its own manager, this is intended to ensure that the timeframe is observed and that the project will be implemented without affecting each other,” he said.

He said currently, the construction from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro has been implemented by 34 per cent.

According to him, a total of 26 bridges will be constructed in order to complete the first phase of the project covering Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.

"The project has also created 6,500 jobs to Tanzanians with different professions including drivers, engineers and technicians,” he said.
