Security tightened at Court of Appeal, High Court today

What you need to know:

Security is beefed at the Court of Appeal and the High Court where two major cases involving opposition parties Chadema and CUF will be heard.

Dar es Salaam. Security has been beefed at the Court of Appeal and High Court in Dar es Salaam because of two different cases that will be separately heard on Monday, February 18, 2019.

The Court of Appeal is expected to hear a petition filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) against the Chadema national chairman, Mr Freeman Mbowe, and party’s women wing (Bawacha) treasurer, Mr Esther Matiko.

The DPP petitioned the Court of Appeal against the High Court decision to continue hearing the petition filed by the two MPs for Hai and Tarime Urban against bail invalidation made by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate Court.

The High Court that is located at least 100 metres from the Court of Appeal facility is expected to issue judgement on the legal board of trustees of the second largest opposition party CUF.

The decision will bless a board of trustee of one of the factions led by embattled chairman recognized by the office of the Registrar of Political Parties, Prof Ibrahim Lipumba or the faction aligned to secretary general Seif Sharif Hamad.

It is therefore expected that the judgement will make one of these factions the happiest side today while the other will come out of the premises heads down.

The judgement is expected to be read by Judge Benhajj Masoud of the High Court in the Dar es Salaam Zone.

The Citizen that has camped at the two court premises has witnessed police water canon vehicles parked at court premises with armed police moving around.

People have been restricted to pass near the court facilities.
