Mwakinyo up to 22nd in the world

Dar es Salaam. A technical Knockout (TKO) win against Argentina’s Sergio Eduardo Gonzalez has powered Tanzanian professional boxer Hassan Mwakinyo into top 22 in the world rankings.

Due to inactivity, Mwakinyo dropped from 15th to 25th early this year.

The boxer has climbed three places to 22nd in the super welterweight category, according to the latest rankings released by Boxrec – a website dedicated to holding records of professional boxers.

Two or months ago, the Tanga-based boxer recorded a TKO victory in the fifth round against Gonzalez in Nairobi, Kenya.

The bout was sponsored by SportPesa – a leading betting firm in the country. The firm also sponsors the boxer.

According to the latest rankings, Mwakinyo tops the African chart, which consists of 100 professional boxers with 152.1 points.

DR Congo’s professional boxer Emmany Kalombo is rated 31st with 126 points.

Kalombo, who is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, is among the best super welterweight boxers in Africa.

Other African professional boxers in the top 100 in the world are Zimbabwean Charles Manyuchi, is rated 36th with 114.5 points and Ali Funeka of South Africa, who is ranked 88th with 63.08 points.

Also on the list are Jurreth Hurd of United States of America, who top the rankings with 602.7 points.

He is followed by Jaime Munguia of Mexico (second, 588 points) and Erislandy Lara of the US (third, 487.2 points).

Others are Kell Brook of England (428.2 points) and US’ Brian Castano (427.2 points).

Last year, Mwakinyo – the talented but humble boxer, made tremendous strides after registering a technical knock-out (TKO) win against England’s Sam Eggington at the Birmingham Arena. Eggington is now ranked 51.

Mwakinyo said he is now training ahead of the next fight to be organized by professional boxing promoters within and outside the country.

“I am happy to improve my position; it is not bad as I am still searching for the title fights. I am sure with the power of God, I will achieve my target of crowning titles of one of the famous professional boxing bodies in the world. I want to crown, WBA, WBC or IBF titles,” said Mwakinyo.
