Over 100 events to spice up Taliss-IST tourney

Dar es Salaam. A total of 107 disciplines will spice up the Taliss-IST swimming championships scheduled to start tomorrow at the International School of Tanganyika (IST) swimming pool at Upanga in Dar es Salaam Region.

Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, Taliss-IST manager Hadija Shebe said a total of 71 events would be held on the first day and 36 events on the second day of the championships. Hadija said swimmers of different age categories will compete in various swimming styles including butterfly, freestyle, individual medley (IM), backstroke and breaststroke.

According to Hadija, U-12 swimmers would also compete in 4 x50 Medley Relay, 13-14 years in mixed 4x50 Medley Relay and 15 years in 4x50 Medley Relay.

Also U-12 swimmers will compete in the 4 x50 freestyle relay, U-13-14 in mixed 4x50 freestyle relay and 15 and over 4x50 freestyle relay in an event which has been sponsored by DStv, Jubilee Insurance, Azam, Pepsi, K&K Company, SDS, RK Technotronics, Kaka’s Restaurant, Subway Osterbay and Taliss- IST parents.

“We are now in the final preparations ahead of the event. We thank all sponsors, parents, swimmers and clubs for showing good cooperation ahead of the event. We also thank the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) for the biggest support,” said Hadija. The event will bring together more than 250 swimmers from various clubs in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Clubs that will field swimmers in the two-day event are International School of Moshi (ISM), Zanzibar’s Wahoo and FK of Dar es Salaam. Also on the list are ISM-Arusha, Dar es Salaam Swimming Club (DSC), Bluefins (Dar es Salaam), Mwanza Swimming Club, Mis Piranhas (Morogoro), Champions Rise (Dar) and hosts Taliss-IST. Male and female swimmers will compete in various categories including U-8, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14 and 15 and those aged above 15. Awards will be given to holders of the first three positions in each event. The first, second and third will be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies respectively. Hadija said the age group victor or victrix ludorum will also be awarded trophies.

“All events will be held on heat declared finals. Medal awards for open events will also be given based on the final place rather than age group,” she said.

The open events will contribute to the overall points of a swimmer,” she said.

According to Hadija, points will be allocated to swimmers holding first to 10th positions as the first swimmer will get 20 points, the second (16 points) while the third (14) and the fourth (12).

She added that the fifth winner will get 10 points, the 6th (8), the 7th (6), the 8th (4), the 9th (2) and the 10th would be awarded one point.
