Taliss-IST swimmers win 12 trophies in gala

Dar es Salaam. Taliss-IST have continued to dominate the swimming game in the country after scoring 12 individual trophies in the just ended Taliss-IST swimming championships held at the International School of Tanganyika (IST), Upanga swimming pool conducted last weekend.

According to results of the event released yesterday, the club, who are under manager Hadija Shebe, have won four gold trophies, four silver trophies and four bronze trophies in the event that featured 269 swimmers from nine clubs in the country.

Prominent swimmers Natalia Ladha, Khairaan Chunara, Isabelle Powell and Dhashrrad Magesvaran won gold trophies in the event while Mayli Van Schalkwyk, Thibault Rochat, Aaron Hu and Mohameduwais Abdullatif were crowned silver-trophies.

Taliss-IST swimmers, who won bronze-trophies are Amylia Chali, Sydney Harderman, Aravind Raghavendran and Augustino Lucas.

Mwanza Swimming Club (MSC) emerged second in the individual trophies winning four gold trophies. The club also won two silver trophies and two bronze trophies. Bluefins Swimming Club won one gold trophy, and two silvers and bronze trophies. Isaac Mukani won gold trophy while Aminaz Kachra and Sahal harunani won silver trophies and Viva Pujari and Hussein Hassanali won bronze trophies.

According to the results which have been endorsed by the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA), Wahoo of Zanzibar and International school of Moshi won one gold trophy each while FK Blue Marlins won two silver trophies in the event through their swimmers, Charlotte Sanford and Ian Lukaza. Dar Swim Club (DSC) won one silver trophy through Peter Itatiro. Champion Rise Swimming Club and Mis Piranhas won one bronze trophy each. Romeo Asubisye of Champion Rise won the trophy and Ellie Cutright won for Mis Piranhas.

Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, Taliss-IST manager Hadija said apart from dominating in the individual trophies in various age categories, the club also celebrated the sixth overall win in the swimming events in the country since last year. The club scored 2,422 points to retain the top honour for the fifth time in a row. Taliss-IST has won 1,118 and 1,304 points in women’s and men’s categories respectively. A total of 78 swimmers featured for the club in the event which was sponsored by Stv, Jubilee Insurance, Azam, Pepsi, K&K Company, SDS, RK Technotronics, Kaka’s Restaurant, Subway Osterbay and Taliss-IST Parents.

Hadija said parents, swimmers, coaches and the leadership commitment was the main weapon for the club to attain the honours.

“The results were due to a strong foundation and continued cooperation of every stakeholder. Our main slogan is ‘team work’ and accountabilities. We’re sweating to produce swimming stars despite the challenges. But we have managed to overcome all challenges and become the top club in the country,” said Hadija.

She said that their task ahead is to maintain the status while scouting and developing more swimmers for the benefit of the nation. The event also saw MSC finishing first runner-up with 1,388 points. The Mwanza swimmers amassed 702 and 686 points in women’s and men’s categories respectively. The third place went to Bluefins of Dar es Salaam, who collected a total of 1,181 points. They scored 587 points in women’s category and 594 points in men’s series. The International School of Moshi (Arusha wing) finished fourth with 845 points, while DSC finished fifth after scoring 646 points. Morogoro’s Mis Piranhas finished sixth with 630 points while FK Blue Marlins of Dar es Salaam was seventh after collecting 502 points.

Zanzibar’s Wahoo finished eighth with 292 points and Champions Rise collected 141 points to finish ninth in the thrilling event.
