Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian swimmers have what it takes to win top honours at the 2018 Cana Zone Three Championship, says Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA).
TSA has unveiled a 15-member squad ahead of the championship scheduled for November 14 to 18 in Khartoum, Sudan.
The TSA chairman, Imani Dominick, said yesterday that the swimmers making up the squad were selected on merit.
“The team is focused on collecting as many medals in the championship as possible despite the fact that it one of the toughest events in Africa,” he said.
“They will be competing against experienced swimmers from other countries, but they are ready for the challenge,” he added.
Tanzania has an impressive record at the Cana events having finished overall winners at last year’s championship held at the Heaven of Peace Academy (Hopac) swimming pool in Dar es Salaam.
The swimmers are now honing their skills in the city under the tutelage of two coaches – John Belela and Radhia Gereza.
“Hopefully, soon we will see swimming, basketball and volleyball join athletics in medal haul at international competitions for Tanzania,” the TSA boss said.
In 2016, Tanzania finished second in the championship held in Kigali, Rwanda.
According to the TSA chairman, the team will leave for Khartoum on Sunday.
The swimmers making up the squad include Khaleed Ladha, Carter Helsby, both from Mwanza Swimming Club; Aravind Raghavindra and Mohameduwais Abdullatif of Taliss Club.
Also on the list are Peter Itatiro, Christian Shirima (Dar es Salaam Swimming Club), Christopher Fitz Patrick, Delhem Rashid Mohamed (International School of Moshi) and Aaron Akwenda (Bluefins Swimming Club).
Female swimmers include Keyla Temba, Chiwoniso Zengeni, Linnet Laizer (Dar es Salaam Swimming Club).
