‘Queen of Ivory’ sentenced to 15-year jail term

The court found Ms Yang guilty of involvement in ivory trade, she was arrested in 2015.

Dar es Salaam. Yang Feng Glan (66), a Chinese national famously known as Queen of Ivory, has been sentenced to 15 years after she was found guilty of being involved in ivory trade.

The sentence was delivered by the Kisutu Resident magistrate, Mr Huruma Shaidi.

Along with Ms Yang others, who faced the same fate are Salvius Matembo and Philemon Manase.

The three, were accused of being involved in ivory trade worth Sh13 billion. 

In case number 21/2014, Ms Yang was accused of trafficking 860 tusks between 2000 and 2014, a haul representing the slaughter of dozens of herds of elephants.

She was arrested in October 2015 and charged with ivory smuggling between 2000 and 2014.
