Tundu Lissu sets September 7 as his return date to Tanzania

Dar es Salaam. Singida East Member of Parliament Tundu Lissu says he will return to Tanzania on September 7, 2019, after two years of absence.

The MP is currently in Belgium where he has been receiving treatment for injuries sustained in September 2017 of a failed assassination attempt.

Unknown gunmen sprayed Mr Lissu’s car with bullets on the fateful day as he drove home for lunch from the Parliament in Dodoma.

His return date confirmed in a short message posted on his social media accounts will be exactly two years to the day he miraculously escaped death.

The assailants pumped over 30 bullets into his car, with 16 bullets piecing through his body.

The Chadema legislator was rushed unconscious to Nairobi Hospital in Kenya where he remained for months before being shifted to Belgium in January 2018 for specialized treatment. The MP has undergone more than 20 operations to reconstruct his body.

Speaking from Belgium on phone, Lissu confirmed that he will be in the country in time for the local council elections slated for October 2019.

“I am returning home on September 7, on the second anniversary of the attempted assassination,” he said.

On the fateful day, the legislator was returning to his home in Dodoma’s Area D when unknown gunmen attacked him in his compound. Police is yet to make any arrests regarding the attack on the MP.
