Songea. Two people in Ruvuma Region have died after drinking illicit liquor said to have been contaminated with poison.
Ruvuma regional police commander Simon Marwa said the incident occurred on March 16, this year, at around 9pm at Meamtwaro Village in Tunduru District.
He named the deceased as Rashidi Ally, 45, and a woman, whose name could not immediately be obtained. It is reported that the latter was the brewer of illicit liquor.
RPC Marwa said Rashidi, who is a mason, had travelled to Meamtwaro Village to engage in construction activities, after which he took the drink.
He took the same drink as the woman who is the brewer of the illicit liquor and which caused their death.
The RPC further explained that after the duo died, the woman was buried by her unnamed husband in cooperation with unknown people.
However, he said after the man had buried his wife he disappeared to an unkown destination.
RPC Marwa said the body of Rashidi was taken to Tunduru District Hospital on March17. On March 18, this year, a postmortem was conducted which established that his death was caused by consuming a hard drink without eating food and not because of taking in a poison as it was previously thought.
However, the police boss explained that currently the police were in the process of asking for a permit from a court to dig the body of the woman out from the grave for a postmortem. He vowed that the police would keep tracking down the husband of the deceased woman so that legal measures could be taken against him.
