What you need to know:

According to college Principal Hassan Kalima, currently the workshop can accommodate only 16 students for training while there are over 100 students in plumbing.

Mbeya. More than Sh300 million is needed for the construction of a plumbing workshop at the college of the Vocational Education and Training Authority (Veta) in Mbeya Region.

Speaking yesterday at a graduation for 560 students who attended a short course, Veta College principal Hassan Kalima said the response to students in plumbing had been positive.

However, he said the workshop needed expansion.

“We have a workshop for training only 16 students while over 100 students are interested in plumbing. So, it becomes hard for students to do practicals.”

He explained that the college had drawn a plan for the workshop building.

According to him, the college faces a shortage of vehicles for training students practically.

Currently, it has only three vehicles, which are inadequate for training over 200 students.

The chief guest at the graduation was Ilemi Ward education officer Sauli Mwaisenye, who underscored the importance of vocational training for youth.

One of the students specialising in hair beauty, Neema Kasulu, said one of the challenges they were facing was the shortage of books.
