Several Makerere students arrested, 3 suspended over high tuition protests

- The university management tweeted on Monday that the Chief Security Officer had been instructed to ensure that Mr Obbo Johnson Emmanuel, a student of Bachelor of Arts in Education, Frank Bwambale a student of Journalism and Communication and David Musiri a student of Bachelor of Office and Information Management vacate the university premises immediately.
Three students have been suspended from Makerere University for allegedly engaging in disruptive activities and breaching the University Students Regulations.
The university management tweeted on Monday that the Chief Security Officer had been instructed to ensure that Mr Obbo Johnson Emmanuel, a student of Bachelor of Arts in Education, Frank Bwambale a student of Journalism and Communication and David Musiri a student of Bachelor of Office and Information Management vacate the university premises immediately.
“As you may know, engaging in disruptive behaviour and organising illegal demonstrations often have a profound impact on the image of the university and the entire Higher Education sector. In this regard, I have received a report that on September 10, 2018, you alleged to have been involved in an unsanctioned demonstration in Lumumba Hall despite the fact that you are not a resident of that prestigious hall. During the said illegal demonstration, you are further alleged to have disrupted lectures at the College of Business and Management Sciences by forcing students out of the lecture rooms thus interfering with the teaching function," reads part of the letter written by University vice chancellor, Barnabas Nawangwe to Mr Musiri before adding that on August 7, he issued the students a warning against the said acts.
The students on Monday staged a demonstration protesting the 15 per cent tuition increment which was recently passed by the university council.
The strike which started from Lumumba hall of residence was foiled by police in an operation which ended with several students being arrested.
The university guild president, Papa Were Salim said about 16 students had been arrested.
The students insist that the university council based their decision on the proposals of only seven members from the guild council who consented to increase tuition without consulting a big number of stakeholders vowing to continue striking until the policy is recalled.
