Zanzibar’s black pepper wins Monde Selection Gold award

Black pepper that is produced on the Unguja and Pemba islands of Zanzibar has won an international gold award known as the Monde Selection Gold Award 2019 in recognition of its quality.

The Monde Selection international evaluates, tests food quality and offer awards to products that meet the international standards, a job that has been by done the institution since 1961.

A panel of judges that offered the gold award to black peeper from Zanzibar was made up of food and beverage experts, professional nutritional advisers, Michelin Star Chefs, member cooks of Euro-Toques and experts from Académie Culnaire de France.

Every year about 70 food and beverage experts test the quality of food products from around the globe, a job done by the institution without being interfered with before announcing the best quality product.

According to a Press statement issued by Leon Jamann, spokesman for Zanj Spice Limited that engages in the production of spices through organic farming, the award was offered through their brand known as “1001 Organic”.

The award will be presented during the 58thMonde Selection Gold Award 2019set to be held on on June 3 and 4, in Rome, Italy.

“This award is an honour to us after hard work by our team and farmers’ cooperative societies to ensure we produce quality products for our farmers of Zanzibar, Tanzania mainland, East Africa and the neighboring countries,” said Leon.

“Despite Zaj Spice Ltd being in its infancy, we feel the pride of sustaining the high quality of our spice products because our farmers follow the instructions of the organic farming,” he said

Zanj Spice Ltd, which was established in Zanzibar in 2012, uses tradestrategies to increase earnings, social prosperity and create a good environment for small-scale- farmers’ cooperative societies. A gold award is given when a product in its last result of evaluation has got 80 to 89 percent.
