The role of small and medium enterprises like BTSGSL in achieving Tanzania’s economic goals

Small and medium enterprises have an important role in bringing the desired economic revolution and in particular the drive towards the industrial economy. The situation has improved in comparison with previous years due to the efforts of President John Magufuli in an effort to turn around the country’s fortunes. The challenge is that, these medium companies are not recognized neither do they get direct support from the government, yet they continue to employ Tanzanian people in large number and pay levies and taxes to the government.

What challenges you are facing?

The biggest challenge is the shortage of professionals in the various technical fields in the country. Our country has a shortage of technical professionals, this is due to our educational systems that do not prepare students to become a technician by giving him practical education more than theory. In order for us to get a strong enough professional work we must as a nation put more efforts on providing practical education.

Most developed countries in the world, for example China, have invested in practical education to produce professionals who go to the field to carry out responsibilities and not paper-based scholars who stays in the offices.

This is the biggest challenge that we face in implementing our day to day activities. For example, you may find some-one who has graduated from the University, but even if you tell him to open AC and do repairs he cannot.

Another challenge is the number of taxes and levies. This has been a major challenge that holds us back. We urge the government to look at this small and medium-sized companies on the number of taxes, Levis etc.
