TCU bars 7 universities from admitting new students

  • The decision follows a government’s crackdown in which two other universities have had their accreditation revoked by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has barred seven higher learning institutions from admitting new students.

The affected universities are Kampala International University (KIUT), Teofilo Kisanji (TEKU), Marian University (MARUCo), Cardinal Rugambwa University (CARUMUCo), Sebastian Kolowa(SEKOMU), St. John University of Tanzania (SJUT-St.  Mark's Centre) and United African University of Tanzania (UAUT).

TCU Executive Secretary Prof Charles Kihampa said on Tuesday September 25 that the commission’s decision, however, would not affect continuing students.

"The continuing students are obliged to go on with their studies and should not be affected by the decision,” he said.

“…the universities [affected] should not admit more students at all levels, until further notice," he told reporters in Dar es Salaam.

TCU has also de-listed five universities from teaching and ordered continuing students at the campuses to be transferred immediately.

"These Universities are, Mt. Meru University (MMU), Bagamoyo University (UoB), Eckernforde Tanga University (ETU), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT-Arusha Centre), and Josiah Kunitaftia University (JOKUCo).

“These institutions are under special scrutiny, therefore are not allowed to register new students in all levels," he said.

For his part, Mr Deus Changala, a representative from Higher Education Students Loans Board (HESLB) assured all loans beneficiaries whose universities were affected that they would continue receiving their loans as per their contracts with the board.

"All students who are HESLB beneficiaries and who will be transferred from their universities should not be worried as their loans will be transferred too to their new higher learning institutions," he said.

Earlier during the press briefing, two Universities TCU announced that two universities had their accreditation revoked. They are Teofilo Kisanji University (TEKU-Tabora Centre) and St. John University of Tanzania (SJUT-Msalato Centre).

"All students at this institutions should be transferred to other universities immediately," he said.
