Huge losses after Mihayo Secondary School inferno

Tabora. Personal effects of over 130 Mihayo Secondary School students have been completely destroyed by fire that broke out last night in two dormitories of the Tabora-based school.

School head master Salvatory Maganga told this paper on Wednesday, August 29, that the items that were destroyed during the incident include clothes, noting that most students now only remained with what they were dressed in before the fire outbreak.

“I call upon Good Samaritans to offer them moral and material support during this difficult time,” said the headmaster of the school owned by the Catholic Church.

An overnight inferno has destroyed two dormitories used by girl students in the school, including those in Form Four who are scheduled to seat for this Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (CSEE) a few months to come.

A Form One student identified by one name of Rose told The Citizen on Tuesday that they news of the fire reached the students in classes as they were in the preps session.

"We weren’t able to rescue any item. We have remained with what was with us in classes,” she said as her colleagues seconded her word.

Tabora regional Police commander Emmanuel Nley couldn’t be reached immediately for comments yesterday night as he was busy leading the regional rescue team.

However, The Citizen leant later that over 20 students were taken to the regional referral hospital, Kitete, for treatment due to shock.
