Dar es salaam. The leading opposition party Chadema has denounced continued incarceration of their Chairman Freeman Mbowe and treasurer of the party’s women wing, Esther Matiko.
Addressing a press conference in the city on 5 December 2018, Chadema Deputy Secretary General (Mainland), Mr John Mnyika said continuing remand imprisonment of the two leaders, both of whom are members of parliament, is not only against civil and human rights, but also against the political rights of their electorate.
"The country is now missing important rights of representation due to this irrational court decision," Mnyika said. Mbowe and Matiko are members of parliament for Hai and Bunda constituencies respectively.
The Kisutu Resident Magistrate Court recently revoked bail for the two leaders who face criminal charges, on grounds of violation of terms of reference and conditions that including a ban on travelling outside the country.
Mnyika also requested the Court of Appeal to review the decision of the lower court as soon as possible before the Court’s scheduled annual recess that runs until January next year.
