Moshi. Farmers in the region have been given a shot in the arm from a partnership between the Kilimanjaro-based Union of Christian Churches and a German company, Burg Warberg, which on Thursday signed an agreement to construct a Sh1 billion agricultural warehouse.
This was revealed by the director of the German company, Mr Peter Link.
He said the project was meant to improve agriculture in the region. “The construction of the warehouse is the first phase of a big project and it will cost a total of $450,000 (about Sh990 million),” he said.
According to him, the agreement to implement the plan would be entered into between the Catholic Diocese of Moshi and the Northern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT-ND).
He said the plan would improve the lives of people by ensuring food security.
He noted that Germany would provide funds for the project and ensure farmers get reliable markets for their produce.
Commenting on the joint project, the Catholic Bishop in Moshi Diocese, Isaac Amani, said it was high time Churches united to ensure food security in the community.
“Some farmers harvest more than 50 bags of maize but find it difficult to store their produce. Therefore, this project has come at the right time,” he said.
ELCT-ND Bishop Frederick Shoo said the warehouse system was good, most reliable and would help people get rid of diseases.
