Dar es Salaam. Bongo Flava icon, Ali Kiba, has opened up about his greatest regret in his music career—taking a three-year hiatus from releasing his own music.
Between late 2011 and 2014, Kiba did not release any solo projects, instead choosing to collaborate with artists such as Spince Seseme, Tunda Man, Papa Masai, and Baucha, among others.
Speaking during the ‘Bongo Flava Week’ segment on his radio station, Crown FM, Kiba revealed that this period is one he looks back on with regret.
He explained that if he had found a better way to manage his personal issues at the time, he would not have stepped away from his music.
"I had no other choice but to take a break so I could focus on other matters, but it’s something I regret and remember most in my career," Kiba said.
Known as King Kiba and with over 20 years in the industry, the Bongo Flava star remarked on the dramatic changes in the music landscape over the years.
He said that today’s artists need to release new songs more frequently to stay relevant.
"Nowadays, if you release a song and then take a two or three-month break, you’ll find the market flooded with other great songs. This generation is relentless; they work hard and release new music daily," he said.
He also added that the notion of music having lasting power has evolved due to the relentless pace at which artists are producing new work.
"Even the idea that music endures has shifted in this industry, given the pressure and speed at which songs are being released," Kiba added.
However, he emphasized the importance of adaptability in maintaining longevity in the music business.
"The music market is constantly changing, and it’s crucial for an artist to evolve when necessary to keep up with the industry’s pace," he said.
