Arusha. Nakumatt, a supermarket chain from Kenya which opened a shop in Arusha last year, has a new strategy to support President John Pombe Magufuli’s drive to clean up Tanzania.
It will focus more on discarding the city of plastic waste and at the same time promote the use of recycled goods and biodegradable packages for its shopping clientele.
“We will go for recyclable goods. The government should inform the public strongly on use of recycled goods so that we can embrace a cleaner environment”, said Mr Benson Olang’, the supermarket’s branch manager in Arusha.
Speaking on the recent country-wide clean-up campaign, the official said Nakumatt was in full support of the president’s drive to get rid of waste which posed a health hazard from the towns, cities and residential neighbourhoods.
He added that the company supported the initiative and would encourage people to use recycled carrier bags as well as safe disposal of all types of wastes, including the plastic materials which cause much menace since they are not biodegradable.
“We (Nakumatt) have a clear policy on environmental conservation. We are ready to team up with other players to support the initiative in cleaning up the environment,” he said, adding that the company has provided dustbins which have been put in strategic locations in Arusha for safe disposal of wastes.
