Tanzania Episcopal Conference Secretary General attacked, one arrested

Dar es Salaam. The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police are holding a suspect in connection with the assault of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) Secretary-General, Dr Charles Kitima.
The suspect, identified as a resident of Kurasini, Mr Rauli Mahabi, was arrested following reports that began circulating on social media about the attack.
The incident is said to have happened near the TEC headquarters in Kurasini, Temeke District.
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro released a statement, saying Mahabi is being questioned as investigations continue.
“He is in custody and is being interrogated regarding the incident. A thorough investigation is ongoing to ensure prompt and stern action against individuals involved in the incident,” said Mr Muliro.
“It is alleged that the priest had been in a meeting with various religious leaders since Wednesday, 9 am, and that the meeting ended at 7 pm. Then he went to their canteen, where he continued taking refreshments until around 10:15 pm,” reads part of the statement.
“He then went to the restroom beside the canteen, where he claimed he was attacked on the head with a blunt object by two unknown assailants,” reads another part of the document.
The statement further says Fr Dr Kitima was taken to Aga Khan Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
