Unguja. President Hussein Mwinyi has on Thursday met with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to discuss the importance of the tourism industry to the Zanzibar economy.

President Mwinyi emphasized that tourism remains a top priority for the government, despite the fact that the blue economy includes five other sectors.

Tourism contributes 30 percent of government revenue in Zanzibar, and President Mwinyi believes that there is still room for improvement.

He specifically mentioned conference and sports tourism as two areas where the government is focused on increasing investment.

President Mwinyi also discussed other sectors of the blue economy, including the port, transportation, and oil and gas. He noted that the port contributes greatly to the economy of Zanzibar, but that there is a need for investment in an integrated port that can accommodate large ships.

President Mwinyi also stressed the importance of the transport sector to Zanzibar's economy, as the island is reliant on water transportation for both passengers and cargo. He called for investment to strengthen the transport sector.

In the oil and gas sector, President Mwinyi told Mr. Blair that Zanzibar needs significant investment to strengthen the business sector and the economy through the port.

President Mwinyi also praised the existing cooperation between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the Tony Blair Institute on various community service projects, including education and health.

Mr. Blair praised the beauty of Zanzibar and its reputation in the world for having good tourism attractions. He advised the government to add more attractions to continue giving the island of Pemba a good reputation.

Overall, the meeting between President Mwinyi and Mr. Blair highlighted the importance of the tourism industry to the Zanzibar economy.
