Tanzania PM Majaliwa to attend burial of Lake Victoria ferry tragedy victims

Ukara. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa is expected to arrive at Bwisya Village, Ukara Island, Ukerewe District today to attend the burial of those who died in the Lake Victoria MV Nyerere ferry tragedy.

The ferry, traveling between the Ukara and Bugolora Islets, capsized on Thursday afternoon about 50 metres from the berth as it was about to dock.

Until 8:00am on Sunday, a total of 225 bodies had been recovered but but the number will likely go up as the search for more bodies and/or survivors continues.

The Mwanza Regional Commissioner John Mongella said on Sunday, September 23, that Mr Majaliwa would arrive at Bwisya any time from 8:30am.

The bodies to be buried on Sunday, September 23, 2018, said Mr Mongella, are those that have been identified by relatives and who (the relatives) have given the government a go ahead to bury the bodies.

"Apart from the Prime Minister, the service will also be attended by various political and religious leaders,” said Mr Mongella.
