Dar es Salaam. Failure to realise the value of resources around communities has been cited as one of the major reasons for failing to make significant development strides.

The Simiyu Regional Administration Secretary, Mr Jumanne Sagini made the remark today (November 23) that the country was blessed with numerous investments opportunities, which attract local and foreign investors, but the potential has not been harnessed to the fullest.

This was said when briefing journalists after a two-week local government reform training programme in Japan, which was organised by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

“Tanzania has a lot of opportunities, unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know how to use them to bring change in their communities," he said.

He noted that Japan has progressed economically because they consider everything around them as an opportunity and utilize it.

Apart from that, he added that development index in Tanzania was still low compared to Japan because sensitisation on economic awareness was low therefore joint efforts were needed to boost development of the country.

The training involved 19 government officials from six regions.

I provided participants with Japanese experience in implementing decentralised, local administration policies and the role of government in supporting local economic development initiatives.
