Dodoma. The government has paid some Sh888.4 billion in pension to retirees until February 28 this year.

Speaking in Parliament today, April 16 during  a question and answer session the deputy minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (Parliamentary Affairs, Labor, Employment and Disabled ) Antony Mavunde said the sum covered 9,971 retirees.

He was responding to a question by Mbozi lawmaker Pascal Haonga (Chadema), who sought to know when government would pay dues to the retirees, who were members of Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF).

PSSSF was formed last year following the merger of the PPF, PSPF, Local Authorities Pension Fund (LAPF) and Government Employees Provident Fund (GEPF).

"It is over a year down the line, some of retirees in several councils are yet to be paid, making them face economic hardship. When are they going to be paid?" Mr Haonga asked.

In response, Mr Mavunde said PSSSF have completed setting up a pension payment system that will enhance payments at regional level.

This, he said would enable retirees to get paid within 60 days from the date of submission of the payments forms as required by law.
