Tanzania: Police allays fear after security alert issued by the US embassy

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Police has allayed fears of terrorist attack rumours saying they are aware of the reports and were monitoring the situation.

According to Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro, this was news like just any other news, which might be true or false, but they were not taking anything for granted.

He added that the intelligence service had received the information since Tuesday.

This was after the US embassy in Tanzania issued a rare security alert, telling its citizens to take precaution over rumours of impending attacks in a tourist area of Dar es Salaam.

"There are rumours of impending attacks in the Masaki area of Dar es Salaam, specifically at hotels and restaurants frequented by tourists and at Slipway Shopping Centre on the Msasani Peninsula," the embassy warned.

However, it also says it "has no substantiating evidence of the threat or information on the timing".
