Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s internet penetration increased from 40 per cent in 2017 to 43 per cent in 2018, thanks to an increase in mobile phone subscription, which made it easy to access the wireless internet.

According to a quarterly communication statistics by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the number of internet users rose to 23.14 million, up from 22.99 million in 2017, with the majority of those using their handsets to go online.

TCRA statistics show that the number of simcard subscribers grew from 40.08 million in 2017 to 43.62 million in 2018.

“As more people have been using mobile phone the number of internet users has risen,” the report states.

Facts from the statistics indicate that among the 23.14 million internet users recorded in 2018, at least 22.28 million people were using mobile wireless.

“This is to say that, out of 43.62 million mobile phone subscribers, 22.28 million of them were connected to internet services through their handsets,” the report indicates.

Meanwhile, internet users using fixed wireless and fixed wired during 2018 were as less as 697,216 and 164,017 users, respectively.

“The number of internet users by mobile wireless service was higher than that of fixed wireless and wired devices (when the two were combined together) by 96.13 per cent in 2018,” the report shows.
