Dar es Salaam. A 42-year-old carpenter living in Morogoro Municipality yesterday emerged the overall winner of the ‘Chomoka na Mwananchi’ grand draw, a promotion  by Mwananchi Communications Ltd (MCL), winning a Tata Safari vehicle worth Sh70 million.

The victorious Joseph Msofe was overcome with joy when he received a call from MCL. “I am so thankful. I have never won any prize in a promotion. I cannot believe that I have won a car; I never dreamt of something like this! I am so happy! Thank you.” said the joyous Msofe.

“Mwananchi is my favourite newspaper.  I have always been reading the paper and I will continue to do so,” said the carpenter, shortly after he was informed that he had scooped the ultimate prize.

The “Chomoka na Mwananchi” promotion that had been running for 100 days by rewarding Mwananchi newspaper readers came to an end yesterday with more than 100 winners within the period. Apart from cars, one lucky winner went home with Sh1 million each day.

Mr Msofe’s car was among three vehicles: Tata Vista, Tata Manza and Tata Safari that the company has given to the winners totaling Sh150 million. This brings the total to 103 readers who won Sh250 million in prizes in a promotion that commenced on August 28, to December 12, this year.

Led by the Tanzania Gaming Board and Push Mobile, Mr Msofe won during the draw which was held yesterday at the MCL head office in Tabata Relini, along Mandela Highway.

Speaking by phone, he said he had never thought of owning a car.

The MCL chief operating officer (COO) Francis Nanai, speaking at the close of the promotion, said MCL appreciated the contribution of their readers. He told reporters gathered to cover the event, that readers should expect another great creative promotion to be launched next year as a reward for their readership.

During the launch of the promotion in August, the MCL managing director, Mr Tido Mhando, said a promotion like ‘Chomoka na Mwananchi’ had never been conducted by any other media house in the country because of its uniqueness in organisation, value of prizes and customer participation.

He said the promotion was an expression of gratitude by MCL to its readers for their contribution in making the paper what it is today – making it on top of all other Kiswahili publications in the country and beyond.

Other winners of brand new vehicles were Mr Francis Joseph Mkwawa of Kimara in Dar es Salaam, an independent energy consultant who won a Tata Manza car valued at Sh50 million and Mr Benedicto Mgoo, a Dodoma-based auditor with the Tanzania Revenue Authority, who was the first winner of a luxury Tata Vista car worth Sh30 million
