Dar es Salaam. The main opposition (Chadema) has said it will take to court Kilombero district administrative secretary (DAS) Yahya Nania for postponing a councillors’ meeting contrary to rules and regulations governing operations of local governments.
The party has also condemned what it describes as forceful removal of Kilombero MP Peter Lijualikali from a meeting without justification.
The party’s deputy secretary-general for Zanzibar, Mr Salum Mwalimu, told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that what happened in Kilombero was undemocratic for it just aimed at delaying the mayoral election.
The chairman election for Kilombero was postponed for the third time on Monday.
“When we enquired from the chairman of the meeting about the reason for postponing the meeting he told us that the responsible minister had written to him to order the postponement of the election…we wanted him to give us the letter,” he said.
He likened to what had happened with a comedy. “We want the minister, who ordered the postponement of the meeting without reason to be punished. We want to see justice being done,” he stressed. Kilombero District has two constituencies, which are both under Chadema. On Monday, the Kilombero councillors’ meeting was postponed after a chaos occurred between Mr Lijualikali and the chairman of the councillors’ meeting, Mr Nania, asked police officers to remove by force the Chadema MP on the grounds that he was not allowed to attend such a meeting because he was not a member.
Speaking later Mr Likualikali said: “I am appointed by Kilombero residents and I should attend the councillors’ meeting for Kilombero and not that for that of Ifakara.”
He said he would continue fighting for his right to represent his voters in the councillors’ meeting until he got it.
Meanwhile, Mr Mwalimu speaking on Dar es Salaam City mayor said Chadema had directed the Kinondoni mayor to make a follow-up on a letter sent by CCM to the National Electoral Commission (NEC), which wanted NEC to recognise Zanzibar MPs as Kinondoni residents.
